BURSTING STRENGTH

Bursting strength is a composite measure of certain properties of the board structure, such as tenacity and elongation of linerboard, and is dependent on the quality of fibre present in the sheet. It is an empirical property in connection with its weight to signify the standard grades for seamless operation. The corrugated boards for shipping containers need to follow the specified regulations that are laid down by the various carriers to define their minimum bursting strength. While bursting strength is an empirical property, this test, in combination with grammage (basis weight), serves to define some of the “standard grades’ in commerce.

EDGE CRUSH TEST (ECT)

This test has gained popularity and has now been adopted by the railroad and other committees as an alternative to the bursting strength test. It determines the strength of these corrugated boxes before they are shipped and tests them for quality purposes. Box compression is a very common problem that affects performance and may lead to product failures, making the ECT a safer and more effective way to gauge the products. This may soon become the internationally acclaimed standard testing method.
